Cloning Amendment will Contain Misleading Language

Forty-eight hours after Missourians Against Human Cloning filed an appeal with the Missouri Supreme Court, the appeal was denied. Jaci Winship, Executive Director of Missourians Against Human Cloning stated, "It is unfortunate for the voters in Missouri that current law does not allow the courts to require that a ballot title is truthful."

We have pursued the legal challenge to this deceptive language on behalf of the Missouri voters who do not want to enshrine human cloning in our Constitution. As Western Division Court of Appeals Judge James Smart stated in his dissenting opinion, "[T]he ballot summary, standing alone, does not provide sufficient reference or contextÉand will tend to mislead..."

As Missourians study this issue and realize the truth behind this misleading, unethical and inappropriate amendment, they will agree with U.S. Senator Jim Talent who stated, "I personally cannot support this initiative because IÕve always been opposed to human cloning and this measure would make cloning human life at the earliest stages a constitutional right."
